Riot Refurb
South Portland High School
Portland, Maine
Final Report
August 2024
In 2022, Julie York, a teacher at South Portland High School, realized that there were many unused machines sitting in closets throughout the building. These machines were in various states of repair, use, and function, reflecting the tendency for older equipment to be left behind as the school updated its technology.
Having worked with students studying Computer Science for years, Julie knew there was a lot of value in learning how to diagnose, repair, and understand the physical components of computers and technology. Tinkering and making is a huge part of Julie’s classroom, engaging everyone in hands-on problem-solving solutions. It is important for students not only to know they can repair but also to understand how things work.
To make this initiative work, Julie had to secure permission, create a comprehensive plan, involve other staff members, gather student interest, and find a sustainable way to maintain the program.
This document serves as the complete documentation of the program's inception and current state, aiming to provide other schools with valuable information that may enable them to replicate a similar program within their own facilities.
